UNDERSTANDING TOOTH ALIGNMENT

Misaligned Teeth

There are a variety of reasons why patients seek out braces or clear aligners from our dental practice or other orthodontists in the area. While the procedures and treatments are fairly standard from office to office, every patient is unique and you need a dentist who understands the complexities of your individual needs as a whole. Our practice provides all patients with a complete oral exam to ensure your treatment plan is set up for success. The best way to stop serious issues from forming is to catch them in their early stages and develop a treatment plan to restore any issues that may have been caused.

Overbite

Occurs when the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth. A small overlap of 1 to 3 mm is normal, but anything beyond that is considered excessive and may need correction.

Underbite

Happens when the lower teeth extend past the upper teeth, often leading to chewing or speech difficulties and jaw discomfort. The chin may also appear more prominent.

Crossbite

Develops when the upper jaw is too narrow or the lower jaw is too small, causing the upper teeth to sit inside the lower teeth. It can affect one or both sides of the mouth.

Open Bite

Occurs when the upper and lower teeth do not touch when the mouth is closed, most often in the front teeth. This rare misalignment can interfere with chewing and speech.

Crowded Teeth

Happens when there is not enough space for all teeth to align properly, causing them to overlap or twist. This makes cleaning more difficult and increases the risk of dental issues.

Gapped Teeth

Results from spacing problems caused by jaw size, missing teeth, gum disease, or habits like thumb sucking. Various treatments can close gaps and improve tooth alignment.
